Elden Ring and Elder Scrolls Morrowind are two of the greatest video game experiences of all time. While fans would love a remake or remaster of Morrowind similar to the excellence of Oblivion, there are no rumors for anything right now as leaks only claim remasters are planned for the Fallout series. We would absolutely love to return to a Morrowind with improved visuals and gameplay mechanics, but, for the time being, all we have to settle for is an amazing mod in-progress that puts the world of Morrowind into Elden Ring.
Elden Ring mod ports the world of Elder Scrolls Morrowind
As noticed by PCGamer, there is a terrific Elden Ring mod being developed that replaces the world of The Lands Between with the open-world of Elder Scrolls Morrowind. The mod is created by InfernoPlus, and, as of writing, has been showcased to over 350,000 people on YouTube.
Basically, what the mod does is “combine the world and lore of Morrowind with the combat of a Souls game”. InfernoPlus has been working on the mod for a “few months,” and “is not finished yet” as the modder wagers it’s only about “halfway done” so far.
In explaining the process of making the mod, InfernoPlus explains that it was originally intended for the Dark Souls 1 engine, but it “could not handle how dense the Morrowind mainland was”. InfernoPlus then tried it for Dark Souls 3, but “it just barely fit within the world loading restrictions”.
As for what else needs to be done to complete the mod, “voice acting is one of the last things” that will be implemented. There’s also the amusing manner of human NPCs taking on the guise of “default girl,” with every non-human NPC “replaced with a goat”. These NPC restrictions were done purposefully to “make sure the game engine could handle the bulk of Morrowind’s characters,” and, although there are some issues, “for the most part it does work”.
As for whether they are worried about legality issues, InfernoPlus isn’t concerned about FromSoftware’s lawyers as he reckons they are “based as f***”. As for Bethesda lawyers, InfernoPlus told the Bethesda legality team watching his video to “take note” of FromSoft’s legal team, and to “go ahead and stop writing that very threatening email because this project does not violate any copyright whatsoever”. Per InfernoPlus, this is because you’d have to own both Elden Ring and Elder Scrolls Morrowind for the mod to work, with InfernoPlus comparing it to the Tale of Two Wastelands mod that “converted the Fallout 3 game files into an add-on for New Vegas”.
