New bits and bobs are being discovered all the time with Elden Ring and its huge open world. Shadow of the Erdtree is the newest piece to the puzzle, and the Realm of Shadow introduces so much new lore, gross little characters, and dozens of new bosses. One of the newest introductions are Spirit Eels, who caught the attention of the community and were quickly propelled to a culty-meme status. Well, Elden Ring data-miner (archaeologist) Zullie the Witch has explored their presence, and in doing so has plucked some from the ground revealing the tiny feet of these “weird little guys.”

As with all things From Software, there’s much more to these little blue Frubes than meets the eye. Zullie has been working with the game files and extracting as much information as possible. In doing so, they have discovered that they are not just ephemeral parasites poking their heads out of the ground as a Spotted Garden Eel does, but that they also have weird anthropomorphic feet hooked into the dirt.

Data names the mob as Rei Chinago, translated as Spirit Eels. Zullie notes the similarities that they have with Spotted Garden Eels, which poke their heads out of sand and water. The data-miner also notes further similarities with Kodama, “Japanese forest spirits often drawn with similar faces.”

The World’s Angriest Kodama, from Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

According to Zullie, “the base pose for the model stretches it out in a straight line, and measured like this, they’re roughly 21m long in total.” Furthermore, they “can also compress themselves into a compact form.”

It’s most likely that the feet beneath the ground are just an inside joke from the developers. With how meticulous and curious Elden Ring fans are, it’s entirely possible that they knew that people would be having a scan of the game files to see their weird little bunions. I know it made me laugh.
