Despite talk of an EA Sports MMA sequel, any such development could run into a major snag if UFC parent Zuffa completes the purchase of rival Strikeforce.

An announcement confirming the sale is expected on Monday, and would cast serious doubt over the already shaky future for the EA Sports MMA franchise.

Strikeforce was the main branding for EA’s game, with the bulk of the roster comprised of fighters from the promotion.

It remains unclear what the sale will mean to any contracts in place between EA and Strikeforce.

Even if EA has secured contracts with Strikeforce to enable a sequel, the publisher would have to seriously consider if moving forward with the franchise is a viable option if long-term use of Strikeforce is ruled out.
