EA has taken over the entire forecourt of Last Stop Ltd near Finsbury Park, North London, transforming it into a military style bunker with Jeeps, oil barrels, sanding walls and fully costumed actors. All this is part of an elaborate stunt to promote the launch of Mercenaries 2: World in Flames.

It’s not the military makeover that’s making the headlines though, but the huge queues as a result of EA giving away £20,000 of free petrol. Customers are able to turn up and pump £40 worth of petrol into their car.

The BBC reports that by 7.30am more than 150 customers had taken advantage of the offer and as rush hour arrived around 30 cars were queued up.

Those taking advantage of the free fuel were understandably pleased, but commuters caught up in the resulting traffic didn’t share the same enthusiasm.

“This is a genius idea, whoever thought of this should be promoted,” said Prince Davis who queued for a quarter of an hour for free petrol. “I’ll definitely be buying the game, you’re never too old to play computer games.”

A woman who wished to remain unnamed told the BBC: “What an extraordinary thing to do, it’s totally irresponsible. I can’t believe they’ve been allowed to do it.”

If you fancy heading down for some free fuel you can head down to the Last Stop petrol station, Stapleton Hall Rd, London, N4 3QF.

Mercenaries 2 is out today for Xbox 360, PS3, PC and PS2.
