EA Play boss Jeff Karp has expressed concerns about the future of handheld game consoles, questioning whether they’re able to stack up against mobile devices and tablets like the iPad.

“I think it looks like a great device,” Karp told MCV, referring to the PS Vita. “But the real challenge for all game handhelds is how they stack up against mobile and tablets.”

“After all, how many devices do people want to carry?”

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has today accepted that the 3DS hasn’t been as successful as Nintendo hoped it would be, and has taken a 50 per cent pay cut as a result. With the PS Vita on the way, there’s a worry that this could suffer a similar fate.

“We are a platform agnostic business and we want them all to succeed,” Karp added, “but it will be a challenge for handhelds. Just look at how smartphones and tablets continue to grow and emerge.”
