The Nintendo DS has sold an astonishing four million copies in the UK alone, independent sales tracking company Chart Track has revealed.
Nintendo also revealed that two thirds (66%) of adult DS users are female. Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? has sold over one million units in the UK, indicating one in four DS owners have the title.
In other positive news for Nintendo in the UK market, the Wii passed the one million sales figure in just 38 weeks, 25% faster than the PS2 and over 35% faster than the Xbox 360. Nintendo claims the Wii currently holds a 68% market share, although it didn’t specify the details of that market. It also revealed that last week saw the highest sales of the Wii in the UK to date.
David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK, said: “Our strategy began two years ago with the launch of our handheld DS console. Until then the proportion of UK homes with a computer games console had been stuck at 30% for many years. The DS console, followed by the launch of the Wii, have helped us break into new markets. 85% of our customers over the age of 45 had never played computer games before the DS. In all two thirds of our adult user base for the DS is female, whilst a third of users of our popular Big Brain Academy game on the Wii are mums.“
Yarnton added: “By offering entertainment for all through a focus on innovative play we are helping to overturn the traditional boom and bust cycle of the computer games industry. Last week saw the highest sales of our Wii console in the UK to date, whilst titles such as Brain Training have never left the UK top 10 chart since launch.“
