Figures released today by UK sales tracking company, Chart Track, show that Nintendo UK is the 2006 UK market leader in both home console and handheld console markets. The data confirms that the DS has achieved sales of more than two million units in the UK.

Much of the DS success has come thanks to the swanky DS Lite, released in the UK back in June. Since its launch the combined sales of Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite continue to outsell handheld rivals (ahem PSP) by a rate of 2.5:1.

Nintendo is also keen to once again point out the strong sales of some of its key titles, with the one million mark in Europe having been reached by Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?, Animal Crossing: Wild World and New Super Mario Bros, to name a few.

David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK added: “The ability of Nintendo DS to appeal to both gamers and non-gamers alike through an exciting, fun and innovative portfolio of software has been instrumental in its success in the UK, with many more Touch! Generations games launching this year and into 2007, Nintendo DS will continue to be the main driving force behind the expansion of the video game market this year.“

Nintendo’s next home console, the Wii, is due for release in the UK on December 8.
