The producer on Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has revealed that future entries in the series will only be localised for the west if this latest entry performs well.

While the Dragon Age titles traditionally rake in favourable reviews from critics, it's ultimately sales that will determine whether or not future games will see a US and UK release.

'We need Dragon Quest to sell in the West, even just a certain amount, if we want to keep making [localized versions],' Hokuto Okamoto told IGN.

Square Enix's efforts in localising the Dragon Quest titles have been patchy. Dragon Quest X, the first MMORPG instalment in the series, was a Japanese-exclusive title, while the first three entries in the series only ever came to Japan and the US.

European gamers were largely ignored until the DS remakes that began with Dragon Quest IV, although even then Dragon Quest V & VI were only released in Japan until they were both remade for Ninty's handheld in 2009 and 2011, respectively.

Dragon Quest VIII was the first core entry in the series to see a PAL release right off the bat without being remade first.
