PSone games have previously been released on the US and Japanese PlayStation Stores to purchase, download and play on the PSP. However, it currently isn’t possible to play these games directly on the PS3.

A new system update released today will enable this option to be offered by Sony, with new version PSone titles said to be offered on the store come April 26.

It’s expected that PSone games will also make their way to the European PlayStation Store, enabling PS3 owners to download and play the games on the PlayStation 3 or transfer the game to a Memory Stick Duo to play on a PSP – some titles will only be compatible with the PSP.

To maintain compatibility with the PSP, a new system update has been released for the handheld, bringing the software up to version 3.40. You’ll need this if you want to play any of the newly released titles.

Expect more details over the coming days.
