Dota 2, the follow up to a custom scenario for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, will be released for PC and Mac in 2011, Valve has announced.

The sequel promises to expand on the unique blend of online RTS and RPG action that made Dota popular with tens of millions of gamers.

According to a GameInformer exclusive on the game, IceFrog, who maintains the original, is working with valve on the sequel. Fans can expect vastly improved cartoon-style visuals thanks to the Source engine, which is also getting a few upgrades, so look out for improved global lighting and true cloth simulation.

While much of Dota 2 should be very familiar to Dota players, upgrades to Steamworks should shake the experience up a little. Valve will be offering in-game rewards for participating in the Dota 2 community, with everything a player does feeding back into their online identity.

You’ll find much more on Dota 2 over on GameInformer.

Despite sounding like a revamped version of Dota Allstars, the game’s huge fan base and the backing of Valve should ensure the sequel is a success.

It’s also good to hear that the same dedication to updating the game – something that won over many a player of the original – will continue with the sequel, with Valve promising it will “keep building software around Dota and around the community and around Steamworks for Dota”.
