The first details on DOOM, “an origin game reimagining everything about the originals” have emerged following its first showing at QuakeCon.

Developed by id Software and due for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC, PC Gamer reports that the game will take players back to a large space station on Mars that’s come under attack by demons and, as you might expect, appears to place a huge emphasis on gore and “atmospheric horror”.

“A new twist on finding the yellow keycard: year off a corpse’s arm and use it to open a handprint scanner,” tweeted the site. “A demon just ripped the player’s arms off and beat him to death with them. The room is breaking out into a standing ovation.”

Alongside the range of “comically large” weapons – including, yes, a chainsaw – DOOM will reportedly introduce “fantastically gory” melee combat, with players able to stun enemies with weapons before finishing them off with their boots.

The game is being built on id Tech 6, a next-generation version of the engine used for RAGE and Wolfenstein: The New Order, and will run at 1080p/60fps.

A release date has yet to be confirmed.
