The Nintendo Switch games line-up should not be judged on what will be available at launch on March 3, but on all the titles coming to the system over the coming months, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has told CNET.

Switch is launching with just five games on March 3, but Fils-Aime isn’t concerned.

“Launch day is not the be-all and the end-all,” Fils-Aime said. “It really is the steady pacing of content that continually reinforces for the people who bought into the platform why they made a smart choice, as well as what compels people who might be sitting on the sidelines to jump in.”

Nintendo was criticised for its heavily delayed Wii U output – even Switch launch game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was originally expected years ago – but plans to do things differently with Switch.

After Zelda Nintendo fans can look forward to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2, all coming in 2017.

“We feel we have this great ongoing march of content to motivate you to jump into the platform,” added Fils-Aime.

Initial success seems a certainty for the Switch, with the diehard Nintendo fans and early adopters snapping up launch stock, but it will be continued sales momentum which convinces third parties to support the system. Perhaps Nintendo can do this by drip feeding the market with its big hitters, especially with Zelda and Mario bookending the system’s first year on sale.
