75% of all marriages in the MMO MapleStory end in divorce, according to a recent study.

Last year the game saw 26,982 in-game marriages in North America priced at $25 per wedding. However 20,344 of those married have since annulled their virtual marriage.

In order to marry in the game, users must complete a quest to receive an engagement ring. Once engaged they must purchase a cash shop wedding ticket, then set a date for the wedding, send invitations, and create a gift wish list.

However annulments require users to pay 500,000 in in-game currency, relinquish their wedding ring, and wait 10 days after the annulment before marrying another.

“Getting married in MapleStory can be quite a fun event for the happy couple and their friends,” explained MapleStory producer Crystin Cox.

“While it looks like our players break up at a much higher rate than people do in real life, at least our players are not on the hook for alimony. Couples who break up are not required to split up their loot, virtual pets or any enchanted items.”

MapleStory is a free-to-play 2D title originally developed in South Korea. Recently it has come to Facebook, under the title MapleStory Adventures.
