Divekick creator Iron Galaxy Studios has been brought on to replace Double Helix Games as the developer of Killer Instinct, Polygon reports.

The news follows Amazon’s acquisition of Double Helix Games in February.

In an interview with the site, Iron Galaxy Studios CEO Dave Lang claimed to be “super passionate” about Killer Instinct and the fighting genre, and that taking on the game is “probably the biggest thing we’ve ever done”.

He also stated that “we can’t wait to show people what we’re going to be doing down the road”.

The free-to-play Xbox One exclusive recently suffered delays in bringing out a planned March update which included final add-on character ‘Fulgore’. The character is now due to arrive on April 9th along with a large update that includes story mode and spectator lobbies for online multiplayer.

Iron Galaxy Studios seem like a good fit for Killer Instinct, particularly for a title keen to become relevant in the professional scene. Having earned respect from the fighting game community for Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, which brought the 1999 Capcom classic to PS3 and Xbox 360, and latterly for the tongue-in-cheek in-joke laden Divekick, the studio is well-liked by hardcore fighting game enthusiasts.

With the new update and character Fulgore coming on April 9, then, and a place in this year’s EVO confirmed last month, Killer Instinct still looks to be very much alive. Could Killer Instinct be the runaway hit of EVO 2014? Or will it struggle for relevance next to the new Ultra Street Fighter IV? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
