Dispatchnarrative director Pierre Shorette and creative director Nick Herman recently discussed the final player statistics in an interview with Polygon. Reflecting on the most popular choices by players, Shorette admits he’s “so disappointed” because “Everyone wants to be nice” and boring.

Shorette says, “Very often, people pick the most boring thing,” which is why he’s “so disappointed in so many choices”. Part of the problem is that too many people roleplay as themselves. Shorette is aware his criticism “is going to p*** some people off,” but Dispatch “isn’t about you,” it’s instead “about you andRobert, about you roleplaying as this type of person”.

One particular scene Herman and Shorette referenced is Blonde Blazer asking you to help fix her dress as she gets ready for her date with her alien boyfriend Phenomaman. The developers were aware that players had already formed antagonistic opinions of Blonde Blazer, but when presented with the opportunity to be rude instead of kind and helpful, players did the “boring thing”.

Shorette further expresses his disappointment, saying games like Dispatch offer you a “chance to explore versions of yourself that maybe aren’t really there”. Another issue with players being so boring and nice is that they miss out on a lot of content.

Dispatch dev regrets Invisigal favoritism over Blonde Blazer

Arguably, the most notable final player statistic is Invisigal decisively beating Blonde Blazer in the game’s love triangle. More than 62% of players fell head over heels in love with Invisigal, while only 26% fell for Blonde Blazer.

Shorette and Herman are disappointed by the massive gap, and they realize it was a mistake to keep Blonde Blazer so distant. Both developers understand that not seeing Blonde Blazer enough resulted in an unfair advantage for Invisigal and is the main reason why people naturally formed a stronger attachment with Courtney over Mandy.

Unfortunately, this is something that can’t be fixed through updates. AdHoc can’t add more scenes with Blonde Blazer, but Shorette has teased that “maybe one day” fans will get to see some of the sex scenes the developer regrets cutting from the game.

If Dispatch season 2 happens, AdHoc has plenty of lessons to learn from. Shorette says AdHoc is “at least going to have to think about” season 2, and Aaron Paul believes the door is “definitely slightly ajar”. However, there’s no guarantee season 2 will happen as AdHoc’s next project is a game set in the world of Critical Role’s Exandria.
