Codemasters is targeting 1080p/60fps for both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of DiRT Rally, chief game designer Paul Coleman has told VideoGamer.com.
But while the PS4 version is âvery, very closeâ to hitting the target, the Xbox One version may end up adopting a dynamic resolution that scales down to 900p during some of the gameâs most demanding scenarios.
âWeâre very, very close on PS4 [to 1080p/60fps]â, Coleman said during a briefing attended by VideoGamer.com last week. âWeâve still got a little bit more work to do on Xbox One. But, you know, I think thatâs fair to say that for everyone out there, PS4 is certainly a little bit easier to get this stuff running smoothly. Thatâs not to say that weâre not going to try and get as close as we can with it [on Xbox One].â
The lofty target is âlooking a bit touch and go [on Xbox One],â however, Coleman later admitted during a separate interview, but if the resolution does need to drop, Codemasters intends to do it dynamically.
âWe donât want to just drop it across the board,â Coleman says. âI think weâre going to look at the troublemaker scenarios, like heavy snow on certain tracks or rain on Rallycross races, and weâll do it where we need to do it. But ultimately I want to be running at 1080p/60fps wherever we can.â
Coleman is âabsolutely confidentâ that the game will hit its target on PS4, however, and that, even though itâs still work-in-progress, the Xbox One version is still looking âpretty goodâ.
âIt doesnât look like weâve stripped it back or anything,â he said. âIt looks much the same as the PS4 version. I think itâs just that itâs been easier for us to get PS4 working at the performance weâve been hoping for.â
And Codemasters may even be able to boost the gameâs performance in a day one patch, Coleman says.
âAs far as Iâm concerned I donât think itâs too far off,â he continued. âWeâve got a lot of opportunity going into our first test submissions at the moment, but the gameâs hitting the shelf April 5, thereâs no reason why we canât do a day one patch to continue those optimisations. So what Iâm hoping is that as much as possible is 1080p/60fps, but if we have to drop it down in any scenarios we do that on a need-to basis rather than a sweeping 900p because itâs Xbox. I think thatâs unfair on Xbox users.â
