Console players of Battlefield 3 will shortly be able to rent their own dedicated servers, DICE has announced.
DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson announced the initiative during an evening event at GDC 2012.
“We almost see [the Battlefield 3 community] as a family,” he said.
DICE works with, and approves, dedicated server providers for the PC version of the game. Whether these providers will support console, or even how DICE will manage dedicated servers on console, is currently unknown.
Once a user has paid for their own dedicated server, on the PC at least, they can fiddle with its various options to their heart’s content. For instance, they can set it to be a private or public server, choose what maps and game modes are played.
Server owners can also kick, ban and mute players.
Three new Battlefield 3 DLC packs have also been announced, the first coming in June.
