DICE, developer of the Battlefield series, has explained why its upcoming Battlefield 3 includes a lengthy single-player campaign. According to DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson, it’s about attracting new people to the franchise.

“Naturally we want to introduce more people to our franchise,” Troedsson told Games.on.net in a video interview. “A lot of people don’t want to jump straight into multiplayer. They want to feel around a bit and they’re ready to move over to online.”

“The hardcore online people, they don’t care, they’re just straight in. Maybe they don’t even touch the campaign. But we want to get more people in, invite more people into the franchise. That’s one of the main reasons why we have this different part of the game,” he added.

Game.on.net’s journalist mentioned that the game had a 12-hour single-player campaign, which Troedsson neither confirmed or denied.

While it’s true that Battlefield is seen as a multiplayer franchise, a strong and visually impressive campaign won’t hurt EA’s attempts to build a franchise as big as Call of Duty.
