Originally inspired by tabletop RPGs, Blizzard’s Diablo series bravely jumped to real-time action and founded the ARPG genre we love today. (Listen to our interview with series creator David Brevik for more on that.)

Now, decades after the series’ original release, Diablo: The Roleplaying Game is converting the real-time action game into a turn-based board game with some very fancy miniatures.

Diablo jumps to the tabletop

Produced by Glass Cannon Unplugged, the company behind the board game adaptations of Dying Light and Apex Legends, Diablo: The Roleplaying Game is scheduled to start its Kickstarter campaign sometime this autumn.

Via the teaser page for the Diablo: The Roleplaying Game Kickstarter, the board game aims to bring the feeling of “cinematic action” and awesome loot to physical game players while also including “premium miniatures” of both enemies and classes.

The game will come with five classes – Necromancer, Druid, Barbarian, Rogues and Sorcerers – as well as an epic 300-page rulebook that will go over the rules (duh), “rich lore, and breathtaking art—including covers by Igor Sidorenko and Antonio De Luca”.

Additionally, the board game will include a series of one-shot adventures in the Diablo universe written by talented authors behind series such as Blade Runner, Warhammer, Lord of the Rings and more.

“Diablo: The Roleplaying Game launches as a fully realized line of physical & digital products for tabletop RPG fans and Diablo lovers alike,” the Kickstarter reads. “From evocative maps to collectible art prints, every item is forged in fandom and hellfire to honor the world of Sanctuary.”

While not confirmed, it does seem that the upcoming tabletop game is based on Diablo 4. One piece of key art from the board game shows Lilith, the primary antagonist of the latest game’s campaign, sitting on a throne, but it doesn’t appear to be a direct adaptation of that campaign.

Alongside Diablo, a bunch of other video games are getting video game adaptations as of late. Halo famously received the brilliant Halo Flashpoint last year, and developer Mantic Games is also working on an Assassin’s Creed board game that will launch this year.
