Square Enix’s newly announced deal with Marvel and underwhelming sales of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided have resulted in the decision to shift development focus away from new titles in the Deus Ex franchise, Eurogamer understands.

This would leave a number of unanswered story threads, which would have been closed with a third game in the trilogy.

Back in 2013 Square Enix spoke of the Deus Ex Universe project, described as “an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games”. This now seems pretty unlikely to be realised.

For the most part Eidos Montreal is now working on the new Tomb Raider game, whilst Crystal Dynamics gets going on The Avengers title with some help from Eidos Montreal.

Eurogamer also understands that Eidos Montreal will also lead development of a game based on Guardians of the Galaxy.

“While we are still working on expanding the Deus Ex Universe, along with creating new content and updates for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, we’re also devoting our talents towards working with Crystal Dynamics and Marvel on The Avengers project,” reads an Eidos Montreal statement given to Eurogamer.
