Bungie has officially taken the wraps off Destiny 2: Forsaken, the next major expansion for its shared-world shooter that forms a major chunk of the game's Year 2 highlights.

Speaking in a livestream, the company revealed that it has been 'building something that the community has been asking for,' with the team taking on a wealth of feedback from Destiny 2 players since its launch last September.

The expansion has a totally different vibe than the vanilla version of Destiny 2, and is notably darker than what we've come to expect.

Destiny 2: Forsaken will return players to the Reef, which was previously seen in the original alien-blasting, loot-gobbling shooter. The story appears to centre on some sort of prison break, and you'll visit a brand new area known as the Tangled Shore.

This area is made up of a mass of rocks and asteroids. It's described as a lawless place, filled with all sorts of intergalactic nasties including assassins, pirates, and more. The Big Bad here are the Scorn, who Bungie says are the most 'malevolent force.'

One of the biggest highlights that Forsaken is Gambit Mode. This combines the two core foundations of Destiny 2 — namely PvE and PvP — into one massive multiplayer ruck, as players compete against each other while under attack from various AI-controlled foes.

You start off being able to view the opposing team, allowing you to wind them up and taunt them from afar. You're in separate arenas however, during which time you will be attacked by regular foes.

The objective is simple. You have to collect Motes, which can be deposited in banks across the arena. Doing this also creates more hassle for the opposing team, although each team can make things more difficult for the other by dispatching a single Guardian to cause havoc.

Bungie is also promising plenty more Exotic weapons and armour, plus armour perks among other additions.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is due for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on September 4.
