Wii U recorded its best ever sales month in December in the US, helping the system to a yearly sales increase of more than 29 per cent compared to 2013, Nintendo has announced.

Software sales for Wii U were up 75 per cent for the year, helped largely by two key titles. Mario Kart 8 sold over 1.7 million retail and digital units combined over the year, while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold 1.3 million units retail and digital combined.

Amiibo also contributed to the Wii U’s growth, with sales of the figures at almost twice the units of Super Smash Bros. on Wii U.

On 3DS Super Smash Bros. has now sold over two million copies, while Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire have sold over a combined 2.6 million units.

“Wii U had its strongest year yet thanks to the highly anticipated software line-up and the introduction of the amiibo platform,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Fans can anticipate another strong year for 2015, especially with more highly anticipated games like Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, as well as New Nintendo 3DS XL, arriving in the first half of 2015.”

15 3DS titles sold over 250,000 units through 2014, with eight of them topping 500,000 sales. Three went on to sell over one million.

According to some number crunching over on NeoGAF, Wii U has now sold 3.69 million units in the US: 900,000 in 2012, 1.22 in 2013 and 1.57 in 2014. Although going in the right direction, 1.5 million units over the year can hardly be described as a success.
