After the controversy surrounding the discovery of the “Feminist Whore” skill found in leftover code on the PC version of Dead Island, Techland has explained it was a bad joke made during crunch period.

Speaking to VG247, Techland’s international brand manager Blazej Krakowiak stated:

“About the inappropriate name in a piece of game code: It was indeed a case of a bad joke during crunch time. It was never, ever a part of the game in any visible way. The skill name in question was just a code ‘handle’ for another in-game skill for a short while.

“During cleanup, one reference to it was missed, the diagnostic/debug file uncovered by one of the users.”

Krakowiak adds that the person behind the mishap is still with the studio, however “it still shouldn’t have happened and the person responsible is very much aware of that fact”.

Additionally he states Techland will not make further updates on any decision that may be made internally about the employee’s future.

Earlier last week the PC version of Dead Island received a major day one patch which fixed 37 reported issues found in the game.
