Snake actor David Hayter has confirmed he’s ‘pretty involved’ in the upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. The star, 55, told YouTube channel Kakuchopurei that Konami had approached him ‘from the beginning’ of the project to remake the beloved game. While it’s now common knowledge Hayter had been back in the recording studio to re-record lines, most likely for Delta, his involvement could be more than Metal Gear fans may have expected.

“From the beginning Konami and I started talking about… you know, I came aboard to do promotion and work with them,” he said. “They’ve let me in with what they’re doing behind the scenes, I got to play a little bit of the game a few months ago. There may be some things that I’m doing voice wise that I can’t talk about yet, but I’m working to support the game and I’m pretty involved.”

✓ What we said about the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Awarding the original game an 8/10 review score, we wrote: With Snake Eater Kojima has found his way back into many people’s affections, and so the urge is to congratulate and praise, to let him and his team know, in the strongest possible fashion, that they are now making just the right moves. However, for all its strengths, Snake Eater is not perfect, yet what it proves is that Kojima is capable of perfection. If any of us wish to see the day when he delivers a product that truly reflects this then we must also exercise tough love, pointing out the remaining problems almost as strongly as we do the brilliant new additions. Only then will you see an MGS title on these pages with a ’10’ standing proudly next to it.

Konami has been keeping fans up to date with progress via the excellent Metal Gear Production Hotline. The remake, which is powered by Unreal Engine 5, borrows from a lot of revered mechanics in The Phantom Pain, such as reflex mode and quick-looting downed enemies. A number of mechanics that existed in the original 2004 game also return, including the ability to shoot the rope bridge Snake encounters early on to cause soldiers to tumble off. Konami confirmed ‘most’ of the MGS 3 Easter eggs found in the original will also feature in Delta, which suggests that there may be some omissions.

The gore and damage system has also been upgraded, with Snake now showing visible scars, cuts and bruises. Explosions leave huge skin damage, while Snake’s camo will get muddy and wear over time.

All in all, Delta is looking incredibly polished, and with Silent Hill 2 going down a storm with fans, there’s a real sense of momentum behind Konami once more. Despite confirming Delta is fully playable from start to finish, Konami is still to announce a release date.
