In an open letter released to HomeLANfed.com Dave Callaham, scriptwriter for the upcoming Doom movie has spoken out over the recent comments attributed to him in the past few weeks concerning his treatment of the Doom franchise. In the quote in question he was claimed to have stated his complete disregard for the Doom storyline when crafting his own script for the movie.

In the letter he disputes the claims he was alleged to have made as lies, stating that “I never made that quote”. He goes on, stating that he was not in attendance at the press conference where the quote was supposedly recorded and that he considers those responsible for the quote “to be nothing less than shoddy and irresponsible”.

It’s not all good news for Doom fans however – he then goes on to say that his screenplay does indeed differ from the game’s storyline, and that it’s likely this will upset fans of the game. Instead, he states, it has been his aim to supplant the main themes of the games into the movie and that he has been the strongest supporter of remaining as faithful to the game lineage as possible, despite intrinsic Hollywood wrangling.

He finishes off with the caveat that ultimately the film isn’t going to please everybody and that even he is upset seeing “strangers bastardize [his] movie”.

It could still be good, right?
