Vigil Games, the developer behind the original Darksiders and its impending sequel, has described its optimism about bringing the series over to Nintendo’s new platform, the Wii U.
General manager of Vigil, David Adams, recently spoke to Game Informer about the upcoming project: “For me personally, I love Nintendo. I love Zelda. I love Mario, and I’ve never actually made a game that’s gone on a Nintendo platform, so for me that’s just awesome. I think that if you look at the Darksiders franchise, it’s a little more mature, but it has that similar aesthetic to a Nintendo game. I feel like it’s a natural fit from a gameplay and platform perspective.”
Vigil has been prototyping new ideas involving the Wii U controller, but stressed that, “we’re not interested in any gimmicky stuff like with the Wii launch games”. In that respect, we can hope for features that genuinely strengthen the Darksiders experience via the new controller, rather than resorting to “gimmicks” that Adams refers to.
Wii ports in the past have suffered due to the technical inferiority of the hardware, an issue that the new console seeks to eradicate. Vigil believes that the Wii U version of Darksiders II will be superior to the Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts.
Asked if Darksiders II will be best on Wii U, Adams said: “Yeah, just because the hardware is more powerful and it will have some extra features that I think will actually be useful to people playing the game. With it’s controller, [the Wii U version of Darksiders II] might be the best version of the game.”
Darksiders II will be released for Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2012.
