Darksiders 2 is being remastered for current-gen consoles, Nordic Games has confirmed.

Due out this winter, Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition promises to be a visually updated version of the 2012 action-RPG, offering native 1080p graphics, enhanced lighting and shadows, and “reworked level, character and environment graphics”.

Every piece of DLC is being thrown in, too, along with further tweaks to the game’s balancing and loot system.

The remaster is being developed by new studio Gunfire Games, a team largely comprised of former Darksiders developers.

“It feels good to be working on Darksiders again, after a couple of years of hiatus,” said president of Gunfire Games David Adams. “This project is a great opportunity for us to pick up where we left off two years ago and dig deeper into the game, which is close to all our hearts. Bringing the definitive Darksiders 2 experience to life is something that we hope a lot of people will enjoy and look forward to.”

Nordic also suggests that Darksiders 3 will be developed at some point in the future, but it has nothing to announce yet.

“We took over the franchise roughly 2 years ago and thought about the next chapter for Darksiders ever since then,” said Nordic’s business and product development director Reinhard Pollice. “Naturally (and extremely excitedly!), there will be a large-scale project based on Darksiders, but for now it is very important for us to take care of the existing games and make those available to a broader audience.

“Bringing Darksiders 2 to current gen was a logical step for us and the team at Gunfire Games know their trade inside-out, so we easily and quickly had lots of ideas that we wanted to realise for this specific edition.”

UPDATE: This story previously stated that Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition will release on both PS4 and Xbox One. However, despite confirming that the game is heading to “current-gen consoles”, individual formats have yet to be announced. Only a PS4 packshot is present in today’s announcement.

After contacting Nordic Games for confirmation that the game would be heading to both PS4 and Xbox One, a representative told VideoGamer.com that further details regarding platform availability would be announced later in the year.
