StudioMDHR’s Cuphead will not be coming to the PlayStation 4, but a sequel might. On NeoGAF, StudioMDHR discussed the game’s exclusivity, who owns the IP and what the immediate future holds for the highly-anticipated game.

‘Yes, this Cuphead game is exclusive to Xbox and PC (with Steam and Win10 versions at launch and a GoG release likely shortly after). There will likely be a Mac version down the road and possibly a Linux version beyond that (unless we lose our houses or whatever).

We own the Cuphead IP’, stated StudioMDHR in the thread that discussed how the games developers remortgaged their homes to pay for the games development.

Cuphead is being released as part of the ID@Xbox self-publishing program. That doesn’t mean a title is a definite console exclusive, but Microsoft does have a set of requirements a developer must meet to take advantage of the program. In recent years Microsoft has relaxed its demands on a case-by-case basis.

Whilst this news may disappoint some PS4 owners, StudioMDHR clarified that it does own the Cuphead IP, and it would be be self published on Steam. The future of the game is very much in the hands of the developers.

Cuphead is a single player or co-op (not online, however) run and gun platformer, focused toward boss battles. Heavily inspired by 1930s cartoons, the visuals are hand drawn, whilst the music is original jazz recordings. Cuphead & Mugman travel across strange worlds, learn powerful moves, acquire weapons and uncover numerous hidden secrets.

The platformer had been showing its face at quite a few E3s now, with no clear release date. This E3, however, finally clarified that it’ll be out on September 29.
