Crytek’s free-to-play shooter Warface has entered open beta on Xbox 360 for Xbox Live Gold members.

The game is part of Crytek’s shift into entirely free-to-play development, an intention stated in February 2013 by the developer’s chief executive Cevat Yerli.

The beta features three versus modes, four playable classes, plus a handful of PvE co-op missions. The versus modes are your standard Team Deathmatch and plant the bomb fare, while the classes are made up of Rifleman, Medic, Engineer and Sniper.

Although Crytek has promised a “constant flow of new content”, currently it feels like the only real innovation here could be the use of the free-to-play model on a console shooter. An experiment that needs to be done, certainly, but the distinctly within-the-box design decisions make this game feel like more of a proof of concept than the Next Big Thing.

Have we missed something about Warface that makes this a really standout shooter? Let us know in the comments below.
