Cryptic Studios has today announced it has secured the global rights to develop and publish Star Trek Online, a massively multiplayer online game based on the Star Trek franchise from CBS Consumer Products.

The game will enable players to become part of the Star Trek universe, with everything from the Starfleet Academy to the ancient temples of Vulcan, the towers of Qo’noS, the Fire Caves of Bajor, the mysterious Mutara Nebula and the unexplored voids of deep space, all created in a visually impressive 3D world.

Players will explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations in an expanding universe. Make contact with alien races, discover resources and uncover hidden mysteries that will change the future of the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek Online will see players take command of their own starship as a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior, and will need to recruit, train and mould their crew into an elite force. This starship will be involved in space battles and will also enable players to beam an away team down to planets.

The game’s currently in development using the Cryptic Engine for console and PC formats. Look out for more info, including the first gameplay footage, at the Annual Star Trek Convention taking place on August 10.
