Speaking in an interview with US cable television show Sunday Morning Shootout, Coppola criticised Paramount Pictures for selling the rights to the film, without first consulting him. “I knew nothing about it,” he said. “They never asked me if I thought it was a good idea.”

The Godfather is scheduled for release on PC, PS2, Xbox, and PSP this Autumn. Anticipation for the title rose with the news that James Caan (Sonny Corleone), Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen), and the late Marlon Brando (Don Vito Corleone) all lent their likenesses to the game, and have recorded voice-overs for it. But this news of the film director’s disapproval for the title can only have a negative impact on the public’s desire to play the game.

Coppola went on to outline his thoughts on the preview build of the game that Electronic Arts granted him access to: “They use the characters everyone knows, and then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other. I had absolutely nothing to do with the game, and I disapprove,” he was quoted as saying.
