There is confusion this morning over how gamers will pay to play BioWare’s much hyped Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, after EA boss John Riccitiello said the game would be “micro-transaction based”.
In a conference call overnight, as reported by Shacknews, Riccitiello said of The Old Republic: “We are continuing to stick to the plan relative to building out our direct-to-consumer models which include microtransactions and subscriptions. The recent launch of Warhammer [Online] is a great example of that.
“Other initiatives we’ve announced, for example [the] Star Wars online MMO, are mid-session games which are microtransaction-based. You’ll be hearing more about those in the February [conference] call.”
However, the same website has updated the original news story to include a statement from EA that refutes Shacknews’ report, saying “no statements have been made about the Star Wars business model”.
Star Wars: The Old Republic was revealed late October by EA and BioWare, an announcement that sparked immediate and frenzied excitement and discussion on the internet. The “story-driven” online game was mentioned for PC only, and is set 300 years after the end of BioWare’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, and thousands of years before Darth Vader and anyone else from the films shows up.
The game is considered to be a real and genuine challenger to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, currently the undisputed MMO king with over 11 million subscribers.
We’ve contacted EA for clarification and will update you as soon as we can.
