Codemasters has announced that it's bringing back the GRID series with a brand new entry, scheduled for later this year.

Making the announcement via the Codemasters blog, GRID will actually be the fourth game in the series, but is eschewing numbering conventions in favour of 'intense wheel to wheel racing action, spanning four continents in some of the world’s most famous city streets and race circuits.'

There'll be a whole host of car types to pick from including GT, Stock, Muscle and Touring and a range of driving disciplines including Street Racing, Circuit Racing, Ovals, Hot Laps, Point-to-Point and more.

The new game will also feature a 'realistic damage' model which will see your car's performance affected by bumps and scrapes, and if you end up checking the same racer repeatedly expect them to become a nemesis in subsequent races.

Finally GRID has also called upon the talents of famous racing driver Fernando Alonso who's been brought on as both a racing consultant and will appear in the game himself, where you'll face his eSports driving team FA Racing. If you're successful at besting them, you'll face off against the man himself in a final showdown event.

GRID is due for a September 13 release on Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4. Here's a trailer courtesy of IGN:
