Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is being developed by Infinity Ward and will feature an urban setting with destructible environments, according to Kotaku sources.
Activision’s currently unconfirmed Call of Duty title is strongly believed to be Modern Warfare 3, but official word isn’t expected for another few weeks. Whilst Infinity Ward remains the series’ primary developer, Kotaku reports that assistance is being offered by Activision’s Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software.
The story will pick up after the events of MW2, with players dealing with the aftermath of the US invasion. This will enable much larger scale warfare, with conflicts leading to a potential World War III scenario. The destruction will also be more epic in scale, with destructible environments mooted.
Kotaku also notes that the story may include series favourites Soap MacTavish and Captain John Price.
There’s not much all that concrete or overly surprising by the Kotaku report, but news of destructible environments – traditionally a feature of DICE’s Battlefield franchise – only adds to the brewing war between Activision’s Call of Duty and EA’s Battlefield.
Perhaps it’s not Call of Duty which should be worried about Battlefield coming after it, but Battlefield which should worry about what Activision has up its sleeve with Modern Warfare 3.
