Call of Duty: Black Ops will launch with support for stereoscopic 3D on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, Treyarch has announced.
There are some technical caveats: on PS3 and Xbox 360 the game has to run at a slightly lower resolution than the regular two-dimensional version of the game, for instance. VideoGamer.com also observed a slight drop in framerate when we had a look at the game running, although the game has definitely been “optimised for 3D” according to Activision’s Daniel Suarez.
Suarez also revealed that Treyarch “didn’t intend to do 3D” until relatively late in the game’s development. Treyarch’s 3D producer Robert Sanchez, who presumably has not been allowed to give out business cards for the last few months, said the inclusion came about after the R&D department started playing with the technology a few months ago.
Despite including support for one expensive fledgling technology, Treyarch claims they have no plans to look into incorporating the newfangled Move and Kinect into Call of Duty. “We’d need to redesign the entire game,” said Sanchez.
Call of Duty: Black Ops will be released on November 9. Fore more on CoD Black Ops in 3D head over to our hot off the press preview.
