Call of Duty: Black Ops has been breaking sales records in the UK and North America, and while the game wasn’t expected to be a huge hit in Japan, the Square Enix published title still managed a healthy 128,922 units on PS3 and 30,279 units on Xbox 360 during its debut week.
The version out now features the original English language and Japanese subtitles, with Square Enix to release a dubbed version next month.
Released on November 20 in Japan was Kinect for Xbox 360 – allowing one day of sales tracking – and while Xbox 360 console sales tripled to 7,083 units there was no place in the Top 20 for any of the Kinect launch titles.

Black Ops has done what Modern Warfare 2 couldn’t and claim the No.1 spot in Japan. First week sales of last year’s game came in at 93,000 units on PS3 – Xbox 360 sales weren’t reported. This was enough to earn a No.4 position on the chart, with New Super Mario Bros. Wii taking the top spot with a massive 431,000 units.
While by no means a huge success, the improved sales for Black Ops over Modern Warfare 2 does suggest the Call of Duty franchise is beginning to get a foothold in the Japanese market.
