Eighteen people have been made redundant as part of Codemasters’ review of their football portfolio, along with the Club Football series being cancelled for the forseeable future.

The titles introduced an interesting aspect in that individual games were released for many of the major teams Europe-wide – Manchester United, Rangers, Ajax and Inter being amongst those to get a personalised game on their behalf. Unfortunately for the Codies, the games simply weren’t much Kop (ba-doom tish!) and despite strong first-year sales, the follow ups a year later didn’t inspire the playing public, with the charms of FIFA and PES proving too strong to challenge.

Gary Dunn, development director for the British company, said: “We are taking time out to reassess our strategy in the football action genre. It is an extremely competitive market sector and we will take what we have learnt and build on that for future development.”

Fans of the Codies other major football series – LMA Manager – need not fear though, as the game will continue unabated.
