Claptrap has been confirmed for Borderlands 2 and will have an expanded role in the sequel, Gearbox has confirmed.

The sequel begins with Claptrap – the very same one you met in Borderlands – as the last remaining robot of his kind. This is because the Hyperion Corporation ordered the extermination of the entire CL4P-TP product line.

Borderlands 2 writer Anthony Birch told Digital Trends: “Our Claptrap is hungry for revenge against his creators. He’s kind of like Rutger Hauer’s in Blade Runner, only minus the bleached blonde hair, moral ambiguity, and sex appeal.”

For fans yet to pick up the Borderlands Robot Revolution DLC there is good news; you don’t need to have played the DLC to understand what’s going on.

“You won’t need to have played the Robot Revolution DLC to understand Claptrap’s place in Borderlands 2, but it certainly doesn’t hurt,” added Birch. “Hyperion ordered the extermination of the CL4P-TP line as an answer to the events of the robot revolution.”

Borderlands 2 is expected later this year, but no release date has been announced by Gearbox or publisher Take Two.
