Jennifer English, known for her role as Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3, once again brought her A-game in her role as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Maelle. In a recent talk looking back on the game’s development, English explained that one particularly upsetting scene was incredibly “gut-wrenching” to perform.

Speaking on an episode of Fall Damage, English revealed that one scene from the game’s second act was particularly hard, but the actor is “so proud” of everyone’s contribution to the brilliant turn-based RPG. Oh, and HUGE spoilers ahead, obviously.

Jennifer English on playing Clair Obscur’s Maelle

Speaking on the YouTube series, English specifically noted the scene in Act 2 where Charlie Cox’s Gustave is passing. After recalling her tears-worthy line, “we could never tell if you were my brother or my father. But to me, you were both”, English details just how hard playing those scenes were.

“Sweet, Maelle,” English exclaimed. “Love that scene. Jennifer Yen wrote the most beautiful script. Her and Guillaume… I loved it. I loved working on that game so much, and playing it now, just as a player, I think it’s just something so magical and special. Like, every element of it is just absolutely 10/10.”

English explained that she’s “so proud” of everyone who worked on Clair Obscur and hopes that everyone else believes the acting is as great as she does. However, playing the role of Maelle wasn’t easy, not at all, and it’s one of the hardest roles the actor has ever done.

“Maelle’s scenes with Verso were some of the most gut-wrenching things I’ve ever had to do,” she continued. “I’m just so proud of that work, and everyone’ sperformances in it.”

Since her first voice acting role in Divinity: Original Sin II, where she played a lot of different characters, English has quickly become one of the most talented and most beloved actors in gaming today.

English’s next major role is the upcoming action game Tides of Annihilation where she plays the main protagonist Gwendolyn. There’s no release date for the action game right now.
