Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has achieved Game Awards history by receiving the most nominations overtaking The Last of Us Part 2 and God of War Ragnarok. For The Game Awards 2025, Expedition 33 has received a total of 12 nominations, which has overtaken the 10 nominations The Last of Us Part 2 and God of War Ragnarok both acquired in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

The Game Awards 2025 is set for December 11th, and Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is nominated for the following categories:

  • Game of the Year
  • Best Indie Game
  • Best Debut Indie Game
  • Best Narrative
  • Best RPG
  • Best Direction
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best Score and Music
  • Best Audio
  • Best Performance – Jennifer English as Maelle
  • Best Performance – Ben Starr as Verso
  • Best Performance – Charlie Cox as Gustave

The only contentious nominations is for Best Indie and Best Debut Indie game. While it is classified as an independent game by many, a lot of others view it instead as a AA game. However, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has also been nominated for GOTY at the Indie Game Awards, so it’s not just Geoff Keighley’s event.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is Nominated for Game of the Year

While it was never in doubt, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is nominated for the big Game of the Year award. Geoff Keighley’s event will happen on December 11th, and Sandfall Interactive will be duking it against the following to win the coveted GOTY prize:

  • Death Stranding 2
  • Donkey Kong Bananza
  • Hades 2
  • Hollow Knight Silksong
  • Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

For many, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is the favorite to win Game of the Year. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director has said Expedition 33 is his GOTY pick, and Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has cast his vote for Sandfall Interactive, too. Not to mention Expedition 33 has already won a GOTY trophy at Gamescom X Asia in October.

It’ll be interesting to see how many of the 12 nominations Sandfall Interactive actually win. In 2020 The Last of Us Part 2 won seven awards including Game of the Year, and God of War Ragnarok won six in 2022, falling short to Elden Ring for GOTY.

Thankfully, Expedition 33 is “not the end” of the franchise as it’s just “one of the stories” Sandfall want to tell within the Clair Obscur universe. We don’t know what they’re planning, but Sandfall have started to work on their next game, promising fans it’s “crazy” and true to the “studio’s DNA”.
