Those hoping to pick up a cheaper version of Oculus Rift later down the line – perhaps with fewer accessories, should think again.
Responding during last night’s Oculus Rift Reddit AMA, founder and creator Palmer Luckey said you shouldn’t expect to see a cheaper Rift SKU in the hardware’s first generation.
“Very unlikely for the first generation of Rift,” said Luckey. “A standardized system is in the best interest in developers trying to reach the widest audience, and we cannot significantly reduce the cost without dramatically reducing quality.”
In that case how soon could we see the second generation Rift? Luckey says generations should last something similar to that of a mobile phone.
“Somewhere between a console and a mobile phone, much closer to a mobile phone,” said Luckey. “The PC spec for Rift won’t change during the 1st generation.”
This suggests we could see the second generation Rift in 2017.
