Cryptic Studios, a leading developer of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, has announced Champions Online, a new MMO based on the popular pen-and-paper RPG Champions. Cryptic has also acquired the Champions intellectual property from Hero Games.

“We thought carefully about which IP to select for our next game,” said Jack Emmert, chief creative officer of Cryptic Studios. “I’ve been playing the Champions RPG since it first came out and I love both the rich history and the wide array of compelling characters which made this an obvious choice for Cryptic Studios.”

Heroes Online will be Cryptic’s first game which is self-developed and self-published. Players will have total customisation of their hero experience, exploring a vast 3D universe.

Cryptic is promising “near infinite” character customisation options, ensuring all players will have a unique game experience. The hero’s name, costume, powers, abilities and even back story can all be created by the gamer. Once a hero has been created players will also be able to design an arch-enemy unique to the newly created hero.

Cryptic says the game is scheduled for release in spring 2009 and according to the developer’s website is in development “for both Xbox 360 and PC”. It looks like PlayStation 3 gamers are missing out on this one.
