As promised, Sony unveiled its new Cell Processor today. While the information won’t make a lick to sense to the vast majority of us, some of it spells out the kind of processing power we’ll be looking at in the next generation of consoles. 4 GHz plus of processing power to be more accurate. In today’s press release Sony were eager to focus on the Cell’s raw power, comparing it favourably to today’s PC’s: Early estimates state that it can process many tasks up to 10 times faster.

Nobody was really sure exactly what Sony And IMB had planned with the Cell, but its fair to say that their ‘supercomputer on a chip’ seems like it will exceed many expectations. How this will affect the PS3 itself is open for debate, but this is certainly going to heat things up for the competition. The fight for control of the next generation of consoles starts here.
