id’s John Carmack has posted a lengthy progress report outlining his work on bringing Doom Classic to the iPhone.

There’s lots of detail there if you want it, but the big news is that Carmack hopes to have the game completed and submitted to the App Store next month.

Carmack also added that Doom fans should be very pleased with the final game.

“With the speed (a solid 30 fps, even in the more aggressive later levels), the audio, the resolution, and the rendering quality, it is Doom as you remember it, which is quite a bit better than it actually was,” said Carmack.

He also revealed that the initial release (OS 2.x) will support multiplayer over Wi-Fi, while a later release for 3.x only will support bluetooth multiplayer. He added that 3G multiplayer didn’t offer acceptable performance.
