According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Capcom is expanding its presence in Los Angeles, and is even considering bringing staff over from its headquarters in Japan to better enable it to pick out the best movie licenses for video games.
Capcom’s VP of licensing Germaine Gioia was hired to work with the movie studios to select the most suitable motion picture properties for video game adaptations. The publisher sees movie tie-ins as a way to reach a large audience, something which is particularly important at a time when video game development can be upwards of $10 million per title.
“I think it is becoming clear that the very largest successful publishers are delivering more and more of a balance to the marketplace,” said Gioia. “They need [not only] their own intellectual property and good solid original development but [also] licensed product that can reach across cultures.”
Capcom may be looking to the movies for sure-fire video game hits, but this doesn’t mean it will be discarding its primary franchises. However, it could mean less original output with the publisher’s current development studios also having to work on the new movie tie-ins.
