Capcom has defended its move to slash its sales estimate for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City by half a million units to two million units.

Last week internet chatter suggested Capcom had lost some faith in the title, believing it would no longer meet its target of 2.5 million units. However, Capcom has denied this is the case, instead pointing to a change in release date resulting in less time to ship copies of the title.

“Last week Capcom Japan announced that the forecast for RE ORC was being reduced from 2.5 million to two million,” explained a note from Capcom Investor Relations.

“To clarify this is not because there is a lack of confidence in the title, but because the release date has moved from the previously stated winter 2011 to closer to the end of the fiscal with two million being the number of copies we expect to ship before the end of the fiscal.”

Capcom’s fiscal year ends March 31, 2012, meaning a launch in February or March now seems most likely.
