Capcom games must sell at least 2 million copies before a sequel is approved for release, according to Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono.

In an interview with Famitsu (via eventhubs), Ono discussed why games like Darkstalkers Resurrection never received a sequel and revealed that higher-ups at the company have sales targets in mind before any new entries in a series can be considered.

“That’s what I’ve always been telling the company too [referring to a Street Fighter x Tekken sequel]. But at the end of the day, there are just some brick walls that a salaryman can never overcome *laughs*. For instance, if a game doesn’t sell over 2 million copies, then we’d have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren’t capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title.”

Ono mentions earlier in the interview that there won’t be a sequel to Darkstalkers Resurrection as that also failed to hit the required sales numbers, joking with the interviewer that “4 million copies” would have to be bought for that to happen.
