Speaking to Gamekult, Antoine Seux, director general of Capcom France, has revealed that sales of mature Wii title Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles have been a disappointment and believes the hardcore gamer has abandoned Nintendo’s console.
“As for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, absolute figures are not too bad, but we’re not going to lie, they are below what we hoped,” said Seux (the interview was conducted in French so there may be translation errors). “After three weeks we’re a total of 16,000 units sold. There is clearly a problem with this style of game on the Wii, where gamers have obviously moved on.”
He continued: “Two years ago Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles was a big success on Wii. You can see that customers of this console have turned to titles with a much broader appeal. It’s a disappointment.”
The so-called gamers’ games are selling less and less on the Wii said Seux, pointing to the likes of MadWord, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop and The House of the Dead: Overkill.
Seux added that he feels the Nintendo loyalists who had been supporting the Wii in its early years have now abandoned the console in favour of the Xbox 360 and PS3.
He concluded: “The Wii is a family console with relatively low attach rates, so for us at Capcom, the future is on PS3 and Xbox 360.”
