Activision has released a new trailer for Call of Duty: WWII that focuses on the game’s single player campaign. True to form for all of its Call of Duty campaign trailers, this one is packed to the brim with bombastic explosions, frantic chase scenes, and intense music that wouldn’t be out of place in a Christopher Nolan production. War isn’t nice at all.

Call of Duty: WWII is going for a different tone compared to its more recent games — at least according to its developers, who hope to impress upon players the horrors of war. Historical accuracy is the aim, along with a deeper focus on the unglamorous aspects of war. The trailer even alludes to the possibility that the game could be set in or around a concentration camp, with one character being interrogated by a Nazi soldier, before being beaten and thrown on a train. It’s definitely an intense scene setter. So much so, that part of me sighed when the pre order section flashed up at the end of the trailer, as I felt it broke the tone being set.

The campaign is promising to be an emotional, and bleak affair, telling the story of Private Ronald ‘Red’ Daniels, a young recruit in the U.S. Army, who experiences combat for the first time on D-Day, which was one of the largest sea to land assaults in history. After surviving the beaches of Normandy, Red and his squad fight their way across Europe, and the game’s missions will see players taking part in Operation Cobra and fighting through France, making their way towards Berlin through Hurgten Forest along the Rhine. Part of me hopes that the developers will have taken cues from the effective, and affecting, storylines told in the likes of Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan in delivering the game’s story.

Call of Duty: World War II is due for release on November 3 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
