The Call of Duty franchise certainly reached a new level with the release of Call of Duty 4 late in 2007, which despite lacking the platform exclusive hype of Halo 3 has gone on to sell over 10 million units worldwide.

Speaking to CNET News Infinity Ward studio head Vince Zampella confirmed the sales milestone, although was unable to offer any breakdown of sales across the three release platforms: Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. He was able to confirm that the game has been most successful on the Xbox 360.

Zampella also said that although other titles have gone on to reach 10 million sales, Call of Duty 4 is one of “less than 10” titles to have done so since 2000.

So successful has CoD4 been that Zampella acknowledges it will be difficult for the dev studio to follow it with another 10 million-seller. Before that though, Zampella believes there’s plenty of legs left in CoD4, with the title expected to sell well this holiday season.
